Many, many epochs ago, in the Jurassic era of the late 90’s, we did a lot of work with resin casting of our own stem blanks.  In fact, as far as I know, the only other carvers in the country at the time who were doing it were JT Cooke and Paul Tatum, and doing it well was an expensive and complex process.  I still have some faux amber and some Sargasso rods left from back then, waiting to be used on handcut stems someday, but we weren’t able to continue this when we moved to France and never really got re-started when we returned to the US.  Now, though, we have a lot more working space at the new workshop and are looking forward to getting back into this, as Talbert Briars have been missing their custom-blended stems.  Look for the first fruits of this work to begin appearing slowly over the coming months.  Here’s the very first example of our “new workshop” resin, blended and colored to once again try and capture a bit of the ocean, with deep green and blue swirls, waves, and bubbles.  The resin is mixed, colored, poured into rod molds, and then a considerable time later the rod is hand-shaped to its final form, in this case a beautiful new pipe tamper!
