To quote from our Grading Page – What is a Ligne Bretagne Collector? These handmade pipes sit at the top of the Ligne Bretagne brand, offering quality workmanship in creative styles derived from classical pipe shapes. They’re created using the same briar I use for Talbert Briars, and go through the same processes in order to be fully comparable smokers and beautiful pieces of art combined. Each pipe is priced individually based on grain and complexity of design, with prices typically running between $350 and $500.
Here’s a tricky marketing challenge – It’s stubby, almost a noseburner-style pipe, and yet the handmade shape (This is not a lathe-turned bowl) and the detail carving racked up the labor hours, meaning it was always going to be more costly. Fulltime carvers are not in the business of making, “Maybe it will sell”s, but in this case, I liked the overall shape and concept so much I figured the heck with it, I’d go ahead and make a pipe of it and if no one buys it, I’ll enjoy it myself this coming Halloween night.
For the best idea of its size-in-hand, check out my Instagram video here to see it “in person”. The bowl chamber is actually nicely sized, no thimble bowl here. The whole thing is also just tremendously likable, or at least I think so – It has all the classical beauty of a bent billiard but coupled with some Edward Gorey embellishment. I sit here looking at it and all I can think is, “This is a pipe that Gomez Addams would have smoked.”
