Here’s something unusual. This is the latest rendition of our ‘Near Dark’ finish, a style of smooth finish that aims to bring the pipe as close to black as possible while still showing the grain of the wood, as opposed to a full-on black coating. If you see it from a distance, it looks gloss black, and it’s only on close inspection that you satrt to see the details of the bird’s-eye and crossgrain peeking out. I had to light it pretty brightly in our studio to get the grain to show. Normally this is a finish we reserve for Talbert Briars because it’s very labor-intensive to do, as the black must be re-applied through stage after stage of sanding, but I had an idea for modifying the process that I wanted to try, and thus here we have a Ligne Bretagne in Near Dark.
