Grain!  A beautiful flame grain that gets better the more you look at it.  I included a random shot of the shank in the photos, and it’s just one example of how the grain lines both sides of the shank with tightly packed, intricate bird’s-eye top and bottom.  To further enhance the natural grain it received a strong “candy apple red” contrast stain that required three stages of application to create the look you see here.
