To quote the guy who does the YouTube pitch meeting comedy shorts, “Wow wow wow.” I mentioned earlier that these tomato-shaped designs seemed to have consistently better grain than many of our other shapes and I guess that’s been proven here, as we’ve had two of our top Grade 5’s out of a production run of ten pipes! While the previous grade 5 was the definition of subtle, this one is all flash and contrast, with a strong & deep black contrast stain to really make the grain of the pipe pop. And what grain it is! It flares from a tight bird’s-eye point on the upper back rim of the bowl down and out, wrapping around the bowl to end in a spectacular display of bird’s-eye spread across the front and entire underside (Check out the underside close-up in the photos). It’s the sort of non-conventional grain arrangement that I like coupled with the naturally tight beauty of the briar, and it looks terrific.
This is the last pipe in this shape series, probably for this year, so the design is certainly going out on a high note!
