Beautiful, simple, elegant, straightforward... This one was a pleasant surprise. We'd picked out a bunch of stummels for rustication and this was among them. When Emily found it in the crate it was so covered in dust that it wasn't obvious what sort of grain it even had, but after cleaning and initial sanding, wow. I immediately set it aside to finish as a smooth instead, because it's such a nice example of even grain coverage and the beauty of crosscut grain flow. Emily worked out the finish coloring on this via applying a two stage layer of tints to give it that subtle, lustrous "golden glow" effect - It's not the hard tint-over-black contrast of a black contrast stain, but instead is a much gentler, more harmonious effect. I have to say, it's damned nice to have her back in the workshop with me, now that she's recovered from all her surgeries!
